Many people in the UK and Ireland still recognise the Unidare name from storage heaters installed decades ago. Units from the 1970s and 1980s remain in daily use, and new Unidare models are still available from electrical wholesalers and specialist suppliers. The brand has managed to stay relevant in a changing heating market, even though the company behind it has undergone significant transformation.

The Unidare that appears in a 2003 Irish Independent article was Unidare plc, a publicly listed industrial group involved in engineering, cable management, and distribution. During the early 2000s the company restructured, relocated parts of its operation, and eventually left the stock market. That corporate entity no longer exists in its original form.

At the same time, the division that designed and manufactured storage heaters had built a strong reputation, particularly in the social-housing and private-rental sectors. In the mid-2000s Glen Dimplex, the Irish-based heating specialist, acquired the Unidare heating brand along with its product range and production facilities in Portadown, Northern Ireland. The acquisition brought Unidare into the same group as Dimplex, Creda, and several other established names.

Today, Unidare storage heaters are produced within Glen Dimplex’s manufacturing network, which includes an upgraded facility in Newry. Although the Portadown site is scheduled to close in 2025 (with production transferring to other group locations), the Unidare range continues unchanged. Components such as heating elements and storage bricks are shared across several Glen Dimplex brands, ensuring consistent quality and ready availability of spare parts.

Unidare and Dimplex storage heaters serve slightly different preferences. Unidare models typically feature straightforward manual controls and robust construction, making them a popular specification for landlords and housing associations. Dimplex equivalents often include additional electronic features and connectivity options aimed at homeowners seeking more precise control. Both lines meet current efficiency standards and are designed for Economy 7 or similar off-peak tariffs.

Glen Dimplex maintains multiple brands to cover the full spectrum of the market. Customers who have specified Unidare for decades can continue to do so, while those looking for the latest technology can choose Dimplex or other group products. This portfolio approach allows the company to support both legacy installations and new requirements without forcing a single solution on every user.

In 2025 the Unidare name therefore represents continuity rather than a standalone company. It is a brand preserved and updated by Glen Dimplex, ensuring that a familiar and trusted range of storage heaters remains available alongside the group’s broader transition toward heat pumps and renewable heating systems. For anyone replacing an older unit or planning a new installation, Unidare continues to offer a practical, supported option.
